On October 20th, the Palm Society of South Texas (PSST) visited two locations in Brownsville, with the first stop at Alice Garza and Mahandran Rajasurier’s in Brownsville. Their garden has changed greatly since the PSST last visit there in 2004; it has become a tropical paradise nestled on a resaca. Following lunch, a brief society meeting was held. The Brownsville Botanical Garden project and allocation of funds was discussed, along with a treasury report and discussion of future meetings. With the exception of one month (February), all the meeting dates for 2008 are now set. An auction of plants donated by the members was then held. After the auction, all headed over to the second garden on the schedule. Violet Springman opened up her art studio and grounds to the society. Her house and studio are nestled on some acreage in Brownsville that backs up to a canal zone. Violet gave a walking tour of the grounds and then showed members her art studio. In the gardens there were many tall Sabal and Washingtonia palms. The November 17th, 2007, meeting was scheduled to be held in Corpus Christi – hosted by Frank Manning and Kathy Jones. The PSST journal is published three times a year by editor Richard Travis of San Antonio, who has served in that post since 1998. His book Palms for South Texas is available at lulu.com. The PSST web hostess is Jana Whalen of Corpus Christi, serving since 1997. s.
