News Update
Honorary Certificates were given out to honor long-time members Dick Endt and John Pettit. The speaker for the night was Mike McCorquindale, who illustrated several species of palms that ARC wants to ban from the Auckland district. Mike also walked through the contents of the society website and briefly provided information about other on-line palm and cycad sites of interest. Members and guests then viewed a DVD of Kew Gardens and John Dransfield’s involvement with Madagascar – in particular the palm Dypsis ambositrae. It was an enlightening story about its near loss in habitat: it exists only in small numbers and is in danger of being chopped down or destroyed by landslips. The last article of the presentation was about the coning Dioon spinulosum on very old plants at Kew Gardens.
The November 6th NZP&CS meeting featured Alan Booth from north of Kerikeri who spoke on the Palms in Kerikeri and how they have grown over the past 10 years. Alan gives a thoughtful and knowledgeable talk every few years, either on his seed gathering travels or on palm growing possibilities.
The Society will hold its Great Annual Auction on December 2nd at Landsendt in Parker Road, Oratia. The New Zealand Palm and Cycad Society is moving toward its twenty fifth year in existence and Dick Endt is keen for former members to use this occasion as a reunion.
For the meeting on February 5th, NZP&CS will return to its usual location at the Faculty of Education, University of Auckland. This meeting will feature Carolyn Melling from Landsendt who will speak on the Landsendt palms and other plants.
The Society will also hold is Annual Palm, Cycad and Subtropical Sale on 8 and 9 March, 2008, at the Auckland Botanic Gardens.
